Enhancement of cultural heritage: from accessibility to inclusion
Tuesday, May 26, from 12 to 13, last appointment of the training course organized within the Manifesta Bellezza Call for Proposals.
The meeting, held by Michela Benente – researcher and associate professor in Restoration at the Department of Architecture and Design of the Polytechnic University of Turin, will focus on the importance of enhancing cultural heritage in relation to user inclusion. Only interaction between the user and the asset, through an experience that evokes emotion and contributes to the personal, rather than cultural, enrichment of individuals, allows for a true valorization of heritage and, by consequently strengthening its protection, ensures its survival.
To generate value that leads to the preservation of cultural heritage, in a democratic decision-making process, it is necessary to transcend the minimum level of physical accessibility of objects by instead creating user interaction through services and resources that satisfy collective and individual needs/desires. Only through the community's recognition of the value of cultural heritage can the costs of its preservation be borne. Therefore, if an encounter with cultural heritage is a fundamental requirement for this purpose, it should involve all individuals. It should be noted, however, that the explicit expression of this need varies depending not only on the value attributed to the assets but, above all, on personal standards of enjoyment. These latter represent a diverse kaleidoscope that cannot be ignored. In recent decades, physical accessibility has certainly been joined by cultural and intellectual accessibility, further complicating the design actions that make them possible.
This evolution stems from the awareness of the role that heritage plays in society and the importance of knowing and appreciating it for the purposes of safeguarding it and passing it on to future generations.
